Martijn van de Hel assisted a provider of dating sites in complying with the consumer rules within the framework of a commitment decision of the Authority Consumer & Market ('ACM').
ACM found that the company complied with the commitments and compensated all consumers. ACM will now focus on other providers of online dating sites that do not comply with the rules. In addition to a warning for businesses, ACM is giving this Valentine's Day tips to consumers on how to recognise fake profiles.
This was prompted by ACM's research into dating websites that use, among other things, fictitious profiles. A company behind a number of these websites has promised to inform consumers more clearly in advance and to compensate offered consumers. The company also introduced a code of conduct with which it sets a good example to its contracting parties and providers of similar services. However, because the other providers do not seem to follow this example, ACM has announced to take enforcement action.
