Cyriel Ruers was a guest on BNR Nieuwsradio - in The Daily Move - to comment on the Digital Markets Act, which came into effect on March 7, 2024. The DMA includes new, strict rules for a select number of online platforms that entrepreneurs and consumers can hardly ignore. Among other things, Cyriel talked about the benefits of the DMA for online shops:
"The DMA offers business users of large platforms - such as a retailer on Amazon - extra protection so they can compete fairly with those platforms. In fact, businesses are increasingly dependent on those large platforms and have little bargaining power. The DMA prohibits certain practices of platforms and gives business users additional rights so that they are stronger."
Cyriel also addressed the fact that web shops on Amazon will henceforth no longer have to fear that Amazon will put its own products higher in the rankings and the right of web shops of free access to data generated by their customers on the platforms.
